English Language Enhancement Preparatory Programme (ELEPP)

Course Overview

English language for foreign students / speakers of other languages. (For both, who are pursuing or not pursuing academic programmes in one of the institutions of CMRGI).

Offered at 5 levels for foreign students are either pursuing academic programmes in one of the institutions of CMRGI or those enrolling with CMRLSI specifically for the purpose of improving their English language proficiency

The ELEP Programme offered for adult learners is primarily meant for speakers of other languages and could be from any walk of life or profession, including:

  • College students who wish to pursue their further education in English
  • School / College teachers
  • Corporate Executives / Businessmen
  • Bank Employees
  • House wives

Introduction
English is the most commonly spoken language around the world. It is the language that encompasses science, technology and business globally. By learning English, one can develop their communication skills and general language competency, thereby building confidence and increasing awareness. Knowing and understanding the English language will open doors to a world of opportunities, leading to better performance and career advancement.

Description
The English Language Enhancement Preparatory Programme (ELEPP), offered at CMR, provides quality language training to enable speakers of other languages from various backgrounds, needs and purposes to communicate effectively and proficiently. Participants undergo an intensive English curriculum that helps them attain the required standard to pursue further academic and/or professional programmes.

At CMR, we know how to help one learn successfully, and we understand the needs of the participants and the challenges they face. Most importantly, we believe in teaching English as a life skill, so that participants of the programme become independent learners and thinkers who will continue to develop their awareness and English language competency by building on their successes in the classroom, even after the course concludes.

All our teachers are professional English speakers with years of training and experience. Class sizes are small, offering an ideal environment for personalized learning and customized instruction.

 

Course Outline

The ELEPP course is offered at five levels, and is intended for international students / speakers of other languages, who wish to enhance their English language skills, develop fluency and a strong general language competency. ELEPP may either be taken as an independent course or prior to pursuing a full-time academic degree programme at CMR Group of Institutions. Participants will be placed at the appropriate level based on a proficiency test conducted at entry level.

As an ELEPP participant studying at one of Bangalore’s top colleges, the candidate will be entitled to use all facilities available on campus including the sports facilities, the library, and labs. The student body of the CMR Group is extremely diverse with a community of international students from over 58 countries and Indian students from all over the country.

ELEPP classes will be conducted at the CMR campus, located in the Kalyan Nagar / Banaswadi areas of Bangalore, which is well-connected to the heart of Bangalore city. Here, the participant will find himself / herself in a peaceful residential area with easy access to shopping, and numerous international restaurants.

Course Duration

Participants undergo 8-12 weeks of classroom instruction at 5 levels (0-4). The durations have been planned keeping in mind internationally accepted standards of learning. A pre-training assessment test is administered before the commencement of the training, to assess the proficiency of the participants in all the four areas of communication (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing), and the training focuses on areas where the participants need the most help.

Custom designed training programmes for shorter durations are available as per participants’ requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

Level 0 (Foundation): Intended for participants with little or no knowledge of English.

Basic* – Level 1 (Beginner) | Level 2 (Pre-Intermediate)
Intended for those with knowledge of basic English vocabulary and grammar and/or the ability to frame simple sentences and understand English fairly well.

Advanced*– Level 3 (Intermediate) | Level 4 (Upper Intermediate)
Intended for participants who have successfully completed the Basic level course, or equivalently, those who have a working understanding of the English language and moderate proficiency in the four skill areas.

Bridge Course – IELTS, TOEFL, etc (Prep Courses)
Intended for those who have successfully completed the Advanced course, and plan to take International English proficiency tests.

*Participants will be placed at the appropriate level based on an assessment test administered at entry-level.

 

On-going assessments

The ELEPP courses are intensive language programmes which require sincere dedication and commitment to learning. The assessment of one’s performance will be based on attendance, class participation, teamwork, written assignments, oral presentations, class tests, and examinations. A participant will be expected to score 80% or more at each level in order to be considered as having successfully completed that course level.

As a general guideline, for every hour of classroom instruction, a participant can expect to invest an equivalent number of hours of self-study at the minimum, in order to successfully complete the course.

 

Course Completion – Certification

Upon successful completion of each level of the ELEPP course, the participant will be eligible to receive a certificate of completion from the CMR Life Skills Institute.

 

Learning Outcomes

Focus: Integrated skill development in the four key areas of language learning – Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing.

Level 0 (Foundation)
Develop ability to converse in simple, short sentences. Enhance vocabulary, pronunciation and learn basic grammar.

Level 1 (Beginner)
Develop ability to construct simple sentences with correct grammatical structure, deliver short presentations on varied topics, demonstrate reading techniques, establish basic writing skills, and participate in class discussions with confidence.

Level 2 (Pre-Intermediate)
Develop fairly good knowledge of spoken and written English, become familiar with topics such as travel, technology, shopping and entertainment, Gain a greater understanding of English grammar.

Level 3 (Intermediate)
Develop the ability to write fairly complex sentences, be able to understand the use of formal and informal English, and communicate confidently and effectively in everyday situations.

Level 4 (Upper Intermediate)
Strong knowledge of English grammar, and fluency in written and spoken English.

 

Course Details: Level 0 – Foundation

Pre-requisites: Knowledge of the English alphabet and simple words

Objectives:

Level 1 – Beginners

Pre-requisites: Knowledge of basic English vocabulary and basic grammar

Objectives:

  • Provide basic English skills that are needed in an academic environment
  • Improve fluency in speaking
  • Familiarize with the use of everyday vocabulary
  • Provide an opportunity to learn about cultural norms through interaction with peers in pairs and groups

Course Content:

Integrated focus on the four language skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing

Level 2 – Pre Intermediate

Pre-requisites: Ability to frame simple sentences and understand English fairly well

The course takes the students from Foundation to Pre Intermediate Level.

  • Revise and develop the Foundation knowledge of English
  • Communicate more accurately and appropriately
  • Understand English tenses better
  • Understand how English can be used formally and informally
  • Increase your vocabulary and understand word formation better
  • Improve your listening and speaking abilities
  • Communicate confidently and effectively in everyday life

Pre-requisite: Ability to converse and understand fairly complex structures, also a vocabulary of 1,500 words

Objective:

  • Revise and develop the pre intermediate knowledge of English
  • Communicate more accurately and appropriately
  • Understand English tenses better; speak using present, past and future
    tenses
  • Understand how English can be used formally and informally
  • Increase vocabulary and understand word formation better
  • Write fairly long texts
  • Improve listening and speaking abilities
  • Communicate confidently and effectively in everyday situations and participate in discussions
